Job description

The Faculty of Space Sciences at the University of Groningen is looking for an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Development and Planning in the field of regional and urban planning. As an assistant professor, he will participate in teaching, research and management tasks at the Faculty of Planning and Environment. His main teaching assignments will be in the Degree courses in Spatial Planning and Design and Geography and Human Planning, Masters in Society, Sustainable Development and Planning and Environmental and Infrastructure Planning, as well as supervision of Masters and/or Degree Dissertations. Due to teaching and research assignments, knowledge of or affinity with Dutch city and/or regional planning as well as knowledge of the Dutch language are welcome. The position includes the allocation of 40% of the research time dedicated to it.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for an assistant professor interested in regional and urban planning with a focus on sustainable development and environmental planning. His research and education focuses on the interface between physical environmental processes and institutional approaches to avoidance, mitigation and compensation. Knowledge and skills in the analysis, investigation and explanation of environmental physical processes and their impacts are expected, requiring knowledge of GIS. Processes may involve flows of matter, energy or pollutants, or human activities such as transport and mobility. Impacts can range from deterioration of soil, water, air or health to aspects such as noise, hazards or climate change. The assistant professor will also be involved in planning strategies and approaches to respond to these physical impacts, recognizing societal sensitivities associated with sustainability transformations. Ideally, you should specialize in one or more of the following topics: environmental planning, climate adaptation, mobility, (transport) infrastructure, green services and resources, energy transition, environmental impact assessment, community engagement.

Organization
The Faculty of Space Sciences employs over 110 staff, 120 PhD students and 1,100 PhD students. The Faculty offers a vibrant academic environment with an international staff and extensive experience working on international research projects. We focus on high quality teaching and research in the field of social and economic geography, demography and spatial planning. In line with the Department's motto "Creating Better Places Together" and the overarching research theme "Towards Well-Being, Innovation and Spatial Transformation" (tWIST), our mission is to conduct world-leading, distinctive and policy-relevant research. With two bachelor's and seven master's programs, we offer a wide range of courses in the broad field of space science.

The Faculty comprises four departments: Cultural Geography, Demography, Economic Geography and Planning and Environment. As an assistant professor, you will be placed in the Planning and Environment department. The department is involved in the master's programs in Society, Sustainable Development and Planning, and Environmental and Infrastructure Planning, as well as in both of the Faculty's degree programs, titled Land Planning and Design and Geography and Human Planning. Research at the Faculty of Planning and Environment focuses on institutional design issues for deliberate interventions in the human environment.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a broader field of spatial and/or environmental planning, geography, public administration, environmental research, environmental geography, land and water management, environmental or civil engineering, or a social science discipline with demonstrated affinity with issues, policy, and planning environmental
  • has an affinity for the interface between sustainable development and environmental issues with policy and planning, environmental governance and institutional structures
  • publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • evidence of a research program consistent with Faculty research and readiness to supervise doctoral students
  • possession of a teaching qualification from a university (or similar) or the willingness to obtain such a qualification within a reasonable period of time
  • experience with different teaching methods; awareness and willingness to use the latest innovations in teaching; have experience using GIS
  • Ability to develop and maintain a university-industry/practice network in the fields mentioned above, including willingness to participate in external projects, events and presentations
  • willingness to participate in relevant departmental committees and/or other management tasks
  • is fluent in English and knows or is willing to learn Dutch (at least CEFR B2 level - reading and listening).

Organization
Hiring conditions

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch Universities:

  • remuneration, depending on qualifications and professional experience, from a minimum of €3,974 to a maximum of €5,439 (scale 11) gross per month on a full-time basis
  • a holiday allowance of 8% of gross annual income
  • an annual bonus of 8.3%.
  • a minimum of 29 licenses and 12 additional licenses in the case of full-time employment.

You will initially be appointed on a temporary basis for one year, with the prospect of becoming a permanent position once you meet the criteria.

The conditions are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).
